Customer Challenge
For this homeowner, installing solar panels wasn’t a practical option. Spray foam insulation had previously been applied directly to the underside of the roof tiles, making a conventional solar PV installation unfeasible.
However, that didn’t mean the customer had to miss out on the benefits of modern energy storage.
With access to an Octopus Go tariff offering electricity at just 9.5p/kWh during the off-peak period, the customer wanted to find a way of taking advantage of these lower-cost electricity rates and storing that energy for use later in the day.
The challenge was to create a battery storage solution that could reduce the cost of running the home without relying on a solar PV system.
GLANtech Solar Solution
After assessing the property and the customer’s energy requirements, we designed a standalone battery storage system using a Fox ESS EP12 battery paired with a 5kW Fox ESS hybrid inverter.
Although solar wasn’t suitable for this particular property, the battery can be charged during the customer’s low-cost off-peak period. The stored electricity can then be used throughout the day when electricity prices are higher.
This allows the homeowner to effectively buy electricity when it is cheaper and store it for later use, reducing the amount of electricity they need to purchase at higher daytime rates.
The system provides an alternative route to improving energy efficiency and reducing household electricity costs, demonstrating that battery storage doesn’t necessarily have to be installed alongside solar panels to deliver financial benefits.
The Outcome
The customer now has the ability to make much greater use of their 9.5p/kWh off-peak electricity rate, charging the Fox ESS EP12 battery overnight and using the stored energy throughout the day.
This can significantly reduce the amount of higher-priced electricity required from the grid during peak periods, helping the homeowner take greater control of their energy costs.
While solar wasn’t an option because of the existing roof insulation, the battery installation has provided a practical way to reduce electricity costs, shift energy usage to cheaper periods and make the most of their existing energy tariff.
It’s a great example of how a well-designed battery storage system can still provide value even when solar PV isn’t suitable for a property.
